REFLECTIONS FROM THE OWNER

In 1789, Harford County recorded Shoulder Bone as a 107 acre farm patented to William Hawkins. The farm flourished and grew with the adding of neighboring lands: “Cowley Hall,” “Joshua’s Forrest,” “Myer’s Favour,” “Normunda,” and “Benjamin Tracey.” The farm now totals 210 acres.

In 1949, the name of the farm was changed to Shoulderbone, and throughout the years since, the farm has provided lush hayfields, corn and soy. Angus Cattle, Suffolk Sheep, Welch Ponies and Greyhounds have delighted  in its meadow’s while the stream runs through the property.

Many notable events defined Shoulderbone Farm. The Shoulderbone Pony Camp was legendary. Children ages 8-10 would bring, borrow, or steal a pony to  learn to ride, swim, wash, jump, love and at the end - camp out. The evolution of Driving for the Disabled began at Shoulderbone Farm, where students in wheelchairs were brought together with carriages and ponies. They ventured through streams and woods, and practiced carriage events in the meadow in preparation to compete in London

The original house boasts its original dining room’s large hearth with a small room above. In the 1800s, a two- story brick addition with fireplaces and an attic were added. The main entrance has a stone walled staircase. In 1951, the next addition was the kitchen with a bedroom above, and then in 1956, a sleeping porch. A breezeway connects the bath and guest room. There is an original spring house which now serves as a reading room looking out over the farm.

For many, many years, the farm provided a haven with its misty meadows and meandering streams, while sisters built forts and gathered wine berries. To live at Shoulderbone Farm has been a rare and cherished privilege.
