Moving is a major life event—on par with starting a new job or welcoming a baby. It’s an exciting time, filled with the promise of fresh beginnings and the thrill of settling into a new space. But let’s be honest—getting to that point can be overwhelming. That’s where a moving checklist comes in to save the day. By bringing structure to the chaos, it simplifies the process and even makes it a bit enjoyable. Don’t worry—we’re here to guide you every step of the way!

Think of this guide as your go-to roadmap, breaking down each stage of the move into manageable steps. Whether you’re a homeowner, a renter, or part of a growing family, this checklist will ensure a smooth (and stress-free) transition into your new space. Let's get started!

6–8 Weeks Before Moving

This is the perfect time to start planning, organizing, and laying the foundation for a calm and controlled moving process.

Declutter and Organize

Before packing a single box, take inventory of your belongings. Go through each room, closet, and drawer and decide what to keep, donate, or sell.

  • Keep items that are essential or have strong sentimental value.

  • Donate items in good condition that you no longer need—local charities would love them.

  • Sell what you no longer use (think furniture, decor, or gadgets) by hosting a yard sale or listing them on platforms like Facebook Marketplace.

Decluttering not only lightens your load but saves you money by reducing what you’ll need to transport.

Research Moving Companies

Hiring reputable movers can make a world of difference. Compare quotes, read reviews, and ask for recommendations from friends or family. If you’re going the DIY route, look into renting a truck and gather a reliable group of helpers.

Create a Moving Budget

Put together a budget that accounts for all moving-related expenses. Items to consider:

  • Moving supplies (boxes, tape, bubble wrap)

  • Moving company or truck rental fees

  • Storage costs, if needed

  • Transportation expenses

4–6 Weeks Before Moving

Now that the planning phase is well underway, it’s time to tackle some logistical tasks and start packing strategically.

Pack Non-Essentials First

Start boxing up items you don’t use on a daily basis, such as seasonal clothing, books, decorations, and spare linens. Remember to:

  • Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to.

  • Use markers or colored tape to indicate “fragile” for items like glassware and electronics.

Update Your Address

Notify key institutions of your change of address:

  • USPS

  • Banks and credit card companies

  • Insurance providers

  • Subscriptions or memberships (magazines, meal kits, etc.)

Schedule Utilities at Your New Home

Set up basic services in your future home ahead of time. This includes water, electricity, gas, internet, and garbage collection. The last thing you want is to unpack by candlelight or be without Wi-Fi!

2–4 Weeks Before Moving

With the big day approaching, it’s time to finalize key details and prepare for a smooth transition.

Confirm Moving Details

Double-check the date, time, and specifics with your moving company or rental truck provider. Miscommunications on moving day are surprisingly common, and you don’t want to be caught off guard.

Pack an Essentials Box

Designate one box (or suitcase) for items you’ll need immediately after the move, like:

  • A change of clothes

  • Toiletries (toothbrush, soap, etc.)

  • Phone and laptop chargers

  • Snacks and basic cooking tools

  • Important documents

Take Measurements

Measure your large furniture items and check the dimensions of your new place. You don’t want to get stuck trying to angle a couch through a doorway that’s too narrow!

Notify Insurance Providers

Update your address with home and auto insurance providers. Depending on where you’re moving to, this could impact your premiums, so it’s best not to delay.

1 Week Before Moving

You’re almost there! Use this week to tie up loose ends and get everything in order.

Finish Packing

Pack the last of your belongings, leaving out only the absolute essentials for the week. Ensure everything is securely sealed and clearly labeled.

Clean Your Current Home

Whether you’re leaving a rental or selling your home, a deep clean is customary (and sometimes required). Pay particular attention to the kitchen, bathrooms, and floors.

Plan for Pets and Kids

If you have furry friends or little ones, arrange care for them on moving day. Having a sitter or family member lend a hand will reduce chaos and keep them safe and happy.

Prepare Payment and Tips

If you’re hiring movers, set aside cash for payment, as well as tips for excellent service (typically around $20-$50 per mover).

Moving Day

The big day is here! With all the prep work, you’re ready to tackle the move with confidence.

Supervise the Loading Process

Whether you’ve hired movers or enlisted friends, it’s crucial to oversee how items are loaded. Ensure fragile boxes are carefully handled and heavier furnishings have adequate support.

Do a Final Sweep

Before locking up, do one last walkthrough. Check every closet, drawer, and corner to ensure nothing has been left behind.

Take Inventory

List items as they’re loaded into the truck. This will make it easier to confirm that everything made it to the new house.

Settling into Your New Home

Once you’ve arrived, it’s time to set up your space and start turning it into a home.

Unpack Essentials First

Begin with the essentials box you packed earlier. Set up your kitchen, basic toiletries, and beds to make the space functional as quickly as possible.

Set Up Utilities

Double-check that your utilities are up and running. If anything is missing, contact the service provider immediately.

Explore the Neighborhood

Take a break from unpacking to explore your new surroundings. Find the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, and coffee shop—it will help you feel more at home.

Update Security

For peace of mind, change your locks and update any security codes.

Turn Moving Chaos Into a Stress-Free Experience

Moving doesn’t have to be stressful—with the right preparation, it can even be enjoyable (??) This checklist ensures that every step is covered, from decluttering to settling into your new home. Feel free to tweak it based on your needs and preferences.
